How do you select press brake tooling and perform tonnage calculations?

The press brake is critical in bending sheet metal into a designed shape. It is the heart of every manufacturing facility and is performed with great care and precision. Tooling selection depends on material type, thickness, bend radius, and V die opening, while tonnage is calculated to ensure machine safety and accurate forming results.

How V-Opening Affects Inside Radius

In air bending operations, the inside bend radius is closely related to the V-opening size. Generally, the inside radius is approximately 16% of the V-opening. Larger V-openings create larger bend radii because the material is supported higher inside the die. Understanding this relationship helps fabricators accurately predict bending results, optimize tooling selection, and maintain consistent part quality.

V-Die Opening Selection: The Critical Calculation

Choosing the correct V-die opening is one of the most important factors in press brake bending. For air bending mild steel, a common guideline is: V-opening = 8 × material thickness. Using an excessively small V-opening increases tonnage requirements, tooling wear, and the risk of material cracking. Conversely, an oversized V-opening may reduce bending accuracy and create larger inside radii. Proper V-die selection ensures balanced bending force, accurate angles, and longer tooling life.
